Dealing with Scams: A Post-Event Recap of the L&D Breakfast Event
Is your organisation ready for a cyber-attack?
This pressing question was at the heart of a recent Learning & Development (L&D) Breakfast Event series hosted by SIM Academy. The "Dealing with Scams" event featured critical insights from leading cybersecurity and fraud prevention experts.
Expert Insights and Panel Discussion
Mr Wilson Tan, Senior Director of Cyber Consulting, Education, and Professional Services at Singtel Global Services delivered a compelling keynote on the prevalence of cyber scams and the critical need for a culture of vigilance and a security-first mindset within organisations. He highlighted the alarming rise in scam operations, many based overseas in regions such as China, Cambodia, Laos, and the Middle East.
The event also featured an engaging panel discussion with esteemed experts:
- Mr Seong Kim Ho, CEO of SIM Academy
- Mr Wilson Tan, Senior Director at Singtel Global Services
- Mr Richard Soh, MSc, Head of Anti-Fraud, Bribery & Corruption at UOB
- Dr Davin Wang, Chief Learning Officer at SIM Academy
Demonstrations and Real-World Impact
During the event, Singtel conducted a live demonstration showing how easily scammers can bypass security measures, providing a stark reminder that these attacks can happen to anyone. Mr Wilson Tan stressed that scammers could access an individual's entire digital life once a malicious link is clicked.
Mr Richard Soh from UOB shared harrowing stories of individuals losing their life savings to scams, resulting in immense personal loss and a deep erosion of trust in others. UOB, as a frontline defender against fraud, has seen firsthand the devastating impact of these scams.
The Role of Education
Education was highlighted as a crucial tool in the fight against scams. In March of this year, in collaboration with Singtel Cyber Security Institute (CSI) and UOB, SIM announced the co-development of a cyber scam preparedness programme titled "Defence Against Cyber Scams." This programme aims to upskill and reskill UOB's over 1,000 frontline branch staff, equipping them with the knowledge and tools to combat cyber scams effectively.
The "Dealing with Scams" L&D event provided invaluable insights and practical advice on how organisations can enhance their cybersecurity posture. By fostering a security-first culture and prioritising education and vigilance, organisations can better protect themselves and their employees from the ever-evolving threat of cyber scams.
