On 10 November 2022, over 150 senior executives from the public, private, and people sectors, and systems leadership practitioners gathered at the Shangri-La Rasa Sentosa for a full day conference, to cross-pollinate best practices on tackling society’s pressing issues.

This was the Singapore Institute of Management’s second Centre for Systems Leadership (CSL) conference, which was aimed at starting conversations to offer insights into systems leadership and catalyzing action in dealing with today’s complex challenges.

The conference was graced by Mr Edwin Tong, Minister for Culture, Community and Youth & Second Minister for Law, and themed “SG100 – A Call for Systems Leadership Across Business, Society and Government”, a reflection of the themes that emerged from the SG100 Futures Lab Workshop from 7 to 9 November. The SG100 Futures Lab Workshop is a ground-up initiative also organised by SIM, and supported by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY). Over the three days, business leaders convened to reflect, refocus and revitalise forces toward co-creating a future and a unique setting for nurturing new ideas and relationships in today’s rapidly changing economic and social landscape.

The conference also welcomed keynote speaker, Dr C. Otto Scharmer, Senior Lecturer in the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts School of Technology, and co-founder of the Presencing Institute and the U-School for Transformation. Dr Sharmer expanded on the conference’s theme by touching on the call for systems leadership to co-create the world we want to live in from Singapore, shifting from ‘Ego to Eco’.

Special guest Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of Parliament, also shared on Singapore’s strategy map and how each of us can play a role.

Mr Seah Chin Siong, President & Chief Executive Officer, SIM, said: “Societies across the globe are facing multiple uncertainties and intricate problems with no straightforward solutions in sight. The world needs systems leadership disciplines to examine these complex issues holistically. At the CSL Conference, interesting conversations were generated on how leaders can collaborate to better serve and deliver outcomes for the larger community.

SIM’s CSL was set up in November 2020 to promote systems leadership as a much-needed capacity for a highly VUCAH (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous and hyper-connected) world.
