Bridging Borders and Building Futures: SIM-UoL Student Leaders Make a Lasting Impact in Tra Vinh, Vietnam

Empowering Communities Through Education and Infrastructure

From 29 June to 13 July 2026, the SIM-UoL Student Representative Council (Transformers) travelled to Tra Vinh and Ho Chi Minh City for Project H3. Supported by the Eco Vietnam Group (EVG) and the Youth Expedition Project (YEP)—which provided leadership training and a partial grant—the fifteen student leaders focused on addressing educational inequalities and supporting youth development. 

The project combined academic enrichment with tangible community investments, ensuring a balanced approach to sustainable social impact.

Key Highlights and Activities

The team engaged in a diverse range of impactful activities designed to foster learning, cultural exchange, and personal growth:

•    Educational Workshops: Conducted lessons in English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Physical Education, and Artificial Intelligence for primary and secondary students to strengthen future-readiness skills. 

•    Infrastructure Development: Built a multipurpose sports court from scratch at the EVG Centre to provide a sustainable space for physical activity and community engagement. 

•    Cultural Exchange: Organised interactive carnival games, campfire activities, and cultural sessions to promote teamwork and mutual understanding. 

•    Learning Journeys: Facilitated immersive visits to local businesses, organisations, and universities, including VicoSap, Grandma Lu's Banh Mi, and Van Lang University. 



Fostering Growth and Global Citizenship

Beyond the physical milestones, the initiative served as a profound growth experience for the student participants. By navigating language barriers, adapting to new environments, and managing intensive teaching and construction schedules, participants significantly enhanced their leadership, problem-solving, and cross-cultural competencies. 

Reflecting on the challenges and rewards of the journey, Zirui, a Student Leader from the SIM-UOL SRC, shared: 

"One of the biggest challenges during the trip was maintaining the same level of energy throughout two demanding weeks of teaching and construction. What kept me going was remembering our purpose, to create a meaningful and lasting impact. I also discovered how adaptable I could be, whether overcoming language barriers, adjusting to a different lifestyle, or handling unexpected changes." 

The deep connections formed during the project resonated deeply with local partners as well. Trang, a Local Volunteer with EVG, noted: 

"It was a meaningful and unforgettable experience. Working, learning, and spending time together each day helped us build strong friendships very quickly. I was especially inspired by the team's dedication—whether it was staying up late to improve lesson plans or bringing energy and enthusiasm to every activity with the children."

Project H3 underscores SIM GE’s steadfast commitment to service-learning, global citizenship, and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By empowering students to step outside their comfort zones and address real-world challenges, initiatives like Project H3 continue to cultivate compassionate, resilient leaders prepared to make a positive difference in the global community.
