In order to get good internship opportunities, you need to score good grades in your studies, so it all boils down to late nights and hard work.
Determined to make the best out of his university career, Solomon Foo decided to change things for the better after feeling disappointed with his ‘A’ Level results. “I was not academically inclined towards the subjects of my choice in my Junior College days and I was hungry to perform well in my further studies.
After undergoing tough training and regimentation in the military service, I felt a drive to work hard for my own future. That was the turning point for me and it spurred me to work harder from thereon,” he revealed.
Solomon eventually gained another shot to prove himself at SIM-University at Buffalo (UB). He chose to pursue a BSc degree in Business Administration as he believed that the programme would equip him with the global exposure and the right skills to succeed. Seizing the opportunity he was given at SIM-UB, Solomon decided to focus on a career development plan that would see him score good internship opportunities.
Solomon reaped the fruits of his hard work and earned an internship at KPMG Singapore in the Management Consulting department in 2016. He was placed in a lean team that handled a top-tier project for a large regional bank. His tireless efforts and dedication did not go unnoticed and he was eventually offered a full-time position at the company upon graduation.
His quest for knowledge and work experience did not end there. Solomon continued to work hard and sought more internship experiences after his stint at KPMG. He also took up an internship position at a boutique investment banking firm to gain more exposure and plans to explore working at other firms before graduating.
“I believe that internships are the gateway to securing good jobs. When your future employer looks at your resume and sees that you have prior experience in the relevant fields, the chances of you being offered a job are higher as it shows the employer that the candidate has dedication and interest in the sector. But in order to get good internship opportunities, you need to score good grades in your studies, so it all boils down to late nights and hard work,” he explained.
At SIM GE, Solomon also got to sharpen his communication skills. “The course at UB enabled me to communicate more effectively. In my programme, we were taught to think objectively and voice our opinions. We were also able to interact with the professors who taught us on a regular basis and this was indeed very helpful in gaining industry insights.” Solomon also continues to gain more exposure as the Vice-President of the SIM Students Toastmasters Club where he organises and hosts events and concerts.
“I do believe that speaking well is important because in the working world, you need to be able to communicate your ideas with clarity. If you do not do so, it would be difficult to achieve what you set out for and you might not be able to convince your client that you are the best person for the job. With the experiences that I have gained at SIM GE, I believe that I am well-equipped to communicate effectively,” he commented.
As he reflects, Solomon believes that as long as undergraduates have a positive attitude and a strong determination to pursue what interests them, they will be able to achieve what they set out for at SIM GE. “Having spent my time here at SIM GE, I know this is an institution with a nurturing environment that wants its students to succeed because there are so many avenues provided for us to develop to our full potential. If you have the passion and drive to succeed, you will be able to do so at SIM GE because opportunities are abundant here,” he said.
