For Parvatha Gokkila Vaaneey, growth began the moment she stepped beyond familiar surroundings. Sport has always been more than just a pastime; it has shaped her perspective from a young age. “My interest in sports began when I represented my school in badminton, which gave me early exposure to competitive sports and teamwork.” What started on the court gradually evolved into a curiosity about what happens behind the scenes. Supporting and observing sports events in Singapore sparked her interest in management and the strategic dimensions of the sports industry.
When it came time to choose a degree, Vaaneey sought a programme that reflected both her athletic foundation and her interest in branding and business. “I have a strong interest in marketing and was also drawn to the Sport and Marketing programme at SIM–University of Stirling as it combines both areas and aligns well with my career interests.” The interdisciplinary structure allowed her to pursue her passion for sport while building the marketing knowledge needed to navigate a dynamic global industry.
A Desire to Step Beyond the Familiar
From early in her university journey, Vaaneey knew she wanted to gain international exposure. The idea of studying abroad represented growth, independence, and perspective. “I wanted to step out of my comfort zone and gain international exposure while studying. The Study Abroad Award made it possible for me to fully embrace this opportunity with confidence and focus on learning rather than financial stress.”

Receiving the SIM Study Abroad Award marked a defining moment. “I felt extremely grateful and relieved. Receiving the award reassured me that I could take part in the exchange without placing too much financial pressure on my family, and it motivated me to make the most of the experience.” The financial support eased her family’s burden and allowed her to approach the exchange with clarity and focus, fully immersing herself in both academic and personal growth.
Living and Learning in Stirling
Vaaneey chose the SIM–University of Stirling exchange programme for its strong academic reputation and the opportunity to experience life in the UK. “I was also excited to immerse myself in a new culture while continuing my studies in a familiar academic structure.”
Spending one semester in Scotland meant adjusting to a new academic environment and daily rhythm. “While the transition initially felt challenging, I gradually adapted by staying open-minded, planning, and embracing new routines both academically and personally.”
“Being away from home and adjusting to a new environment was challenging at first.” Yet she approached these challenges intentionally. “I overcame this by staying organised, managing my time and finances carefully, and reminding myself that growth often comes from discomfort.”

Beyond lectures and coursework, everyday experiences became powerful teachers. “One of the most memorable experiences was adapting to daily life in Scotland, from navigating a new academic environment to exploring nearby cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow. Living independently in a new country pushed me to become more confident and self-reliant, which made the experience especially meaningful.” The independence she gained extended far beyond academic achievement.
Broadening Perspectives, Strengthening Purpose
The exchange reshaped how Vaaneey sees the world and her place within it. “It broadened my perspective and helped me appreciate different cultures and ways of thinking. It made me more adaptable, confident, and open to global perspectives.” Exposure to new environments strengthened not only her worldview but also her sense of direction.

Academically and professionally, the impact was clear. “The experience strengthened my interest in pursuing opportunities related to sports marketing and events, especially in international or multicultural settings.” Immersion in a different cultural context deepened her conviction to pursue global and multicultural career pathways in the future.
When asked to sum up her study abroad journey in one word, Vaaneey did not hesitate: “Transformative, because it helped me grow in independence, confidence, and global awareness.”
Through the SIM Study Abroad Award, students like Vaaneey are empowered to experience learning beyond borders, developing not only academic knowledge but also adaptability, and global mindset needed to thrive in an interconnected world.
