In a world where careers often zigzag, Nelson Lee has charted a remarkably focused course. For more than 30 years, the SIM alumnus and current CEO of Eliteus Pte Ltd has built a purposeful career in Human Resources, one guided by conviction, resilience, and a deep commitment to people. His story is not defined by corporate milestones alone, but by mentorship, service, and a belief in people-centred leadership.

Choosing HR by Choice, Not Chance

“I applied to over 200 jobs,” Nelson recalls. “It was so difficult to get one. Even my NUS classmates were landing jobs quickly, and I was left wondering - what is happening to me?”

In an era before LinkedIn or online portals, Nelson’s perseverance in the face of rejection speaks volumes.

In an era before LinkedIn or online portals, Nelson’s perseverance in the face of rejection speaks volumes. “I had job offers outside HR, but I rejected them,” he says. “I wanted HR, and I chose to wait for it.” That early decision laid the foundation for a fulfilling journey. “If your first job is by choice, not chance, you bring passion to it. That passion fuels learning, and learning builds your competence.”

Over the years, Nelson’s HR career has spanned multiple industries and covered many countries/markets, including Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Australia, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China. He has held senior leadership roles, most notably as the Founding Chief Executive Officer of the Institute for Human Resource Professionals (IHRP).

Laying the Foundation for a National HR Movement

In 2016, Nelson was entrusted with a landmark initiative: to establish IHRP from the ground up and build a national certification framework for HR in Singapore. From drafting the organisation’s name and constitution and securing a 10-year government funding commitment, to developing its strategy, assemble the start-up team, and vetting the first assessment frameworks, he was involved in every step.

The creation of IHRP was more than an organisational milestone; it signalled a shift in Singapore’s perception of HR from a back-office function to a strategic business partner.

SIM as a Catalyst for Change

For Nelson, education was a turning point. “I am thankful to SIM for offering such a strong HR curriculum,” he says. “The lecturers and programme structure affirmed I’d chosen the right path.”

Beyond practical skills, SIM gave him the confidence to pursue leadership and later, to give back as a mentor and educator.

Purpose Through People

What has kept Nelson in HR for over three decades? “People,” he says simply. “That is what makes the difference - understanding, guiding, and growing people.” He believes every generation faces challenges - whether securing their first job or climbing to the next level. “Even after a few years of experience, moving up can still be hard. That’s why it’s important to choose a path you’re passionate about. The drive to learn will carry you through the difficult parts.”

Nelson measures his impact not in grand gestures, but in the meaningful relationships he fosters.

Nelson measures his impact not in grand gestures, but in the meaningful relationships he fosters. “Whether it is students, former colleagues, or junior HR practitioners, I am always open to sharing,” he says. Many still reach out for advice years later. “To get others interested in HR and help them grow, be a ‘good HR’ and that is the legacy I hope to leave.”

Lessons for a New Generation

Nelson’s longevity in such a dynamic field did not happen by chance. “I focus on doing my best in the role entrusted to me, giving it my full commitment,” he shares. “And I remain adaptable, always learning from my own mistakes and the mistakes of others, and have a mindset to challenge the status quo to try a new, creative but unconventional way.” This mindset has enabled him to stay ahead of change, particularly as HR’s role has evolved to encompass culture-building, strategy, and digital transformation.

To the next generation of professionals, Nelson offers both encouragement and realism. “You might end up in a job unrelated to your degree, and that’s okay,” he says. “At that age, many don’t yet know their true calling. But be realistic and passionate. If you enjoy what you do and it supports you, that is a strong start.” He also stresses the power of visibility: “Networking is not about who you know, it is about who knows you. That credibility is key to building your career.”

Giving Back with Purpose

Now at the helm of Eliteus Pet Ltd, Nelson continues to shape people strategies with the same passion he had when he first entered the HR field.

Now at the helm of Eliteus Pte Ltd, Nelson continues to shape people strategies with the same passion he had when he first entered the HR field. What distinguishes him is not just his resume, but his heart for service. Through mentoring, teaching, and contributing to the broader community, Nelson champions the value of lived experience and shared knowledge.

“I have been fortunate to find joy in what I do,” he reflects. “If I can help someone else find that same joy and purpose, that’s impact enough for me.”
