From Athlete to Professional: Teo Wei Min's Path to Career-Ready Success

For Teo Wei Min, excellence has never been confined to a single path. Whether in the classroom or on the competition mat, her journey reflects a consistent pursuit of growth. For her achievements in Taekwondo and her academics, she has been awarded the SIM Sports and Artistic Talent Award, a programme under the SIM Impact Fund.

For Teo Wei Min, excellence has never been confined to a single path. Whether in the classroom or on the competition mat, her journey reflects a consistent pursuit of growth.

Looking at Wei Min today as a national athlete representing the Singapore Taekwondo team, you would not think that she was once a student who lacked confidence.

However, as someone who places importance on her academics and co-curriculars, Wei Min strove to push herself, welcoming challenges instead of shying away from them.

In secondary school, she held leadership positions in both the student council and her Girls' Brigade CCA. It was through this experience that Wei Min learnt what leadership meant.

"One of the biggest challenges of being a young leader was earning the respect of my peers," she recalls. "While some were willing to follow and work alongside me, others questioned my decisions, pushed boundaries, or chose not to engage. It was an early lesson that respect cannot be demanded—it must be earned."

"It taught me that leadership is not about asserting authority, but about building relationships, understanding different personalities, and finding ways to bring people together toward a common goal."

That problem-solving mindset shaped her early achievements. Aside from graduating in the top 25% of her secondary school cohort before progressing to a polytechnic, Wei Min would quickly rise to become a national Taekwondo athlete despite being new to the sport.

STEPPING INTO SOMETHING NEW

Although Taekwondo had long been on her radar, it was only during her polytechnic years that she chose to pursue the sport.

Under the guidance of supportive coaches and peers, Wei Min began to grow. From winning a silver medal at the 2018 POL-ITE Taekwondo Games to attaining her black belt in 2021, Wei Min consistently raised her standards. Her efforts were recognised through consecutive Colours Awards for Sports Excellence, and in 2022, she was selected for Singapore's national Taekwondo squad.

That same year, Wei Min also enrolled in an International Relations degree programme with SIM. However, as her involvement in sport deepened, she began to reflect more deeply on how her academic path aligned with her evolving interests.

And in the final year of her studies, Wei Min made a bold choice: changing her course of study.

WHEN DIRECTION TAKES SHAPE

With just a year remaining in her degree, the decision to pivot required careful consideration. It was during this period that SIM's Student Services Centre played a crucial role in guiding her next steps.

"They emphasised that it was okay to make a change if my current path did not align with my interests or long-term goals, and shared examples of students who had successfully made similar transitions," Wei Min affirms. "With that clarity and reassurance, I proceeded with the transfer in April and began the bridging programme in June."

Wei Min enrolled in a bridging programme that enabled her to transition into the University of Stirling’s Bachelor of Arts (Hons) Sports Studies and Marketing, entering directly into Year 2.

Since making the switch, Wei Min has consistently performed at a First Class level. "When there is alignment between your interests and what you are studying, it becomes much easier to fully engage and apply what you learn," she smiles.

GROWING THROUGH SPORT AND COMMUNITY

Besides academics, SIM's Taekwondo Club also played a significant role in Wei Min's development.

She explains, "While I fell short in my attempts at the 2023 World University Games and 2024 ASEAN University Games, SIM Taekwondo gave me repeated opportunities to compete for them, enabling me to keep honing my skills in the sport."

That trust became her source of motivation, and Wei Min eventually represented SIM in the 2025 World University Games. She also competed in other prestigious events such as the Chuncheon Korea Open and the Asian Open in 2024.

"Through SIM's vibrant academic and sporting environment, I developed the confidence, adaptability, and self-discipline to navigate challenges, lead with purpose, and add value in a professional setting," she enthuses.

LOOKING AHEAD

In her final year, Wei Min remains focused on both her academic and athletic goals.

"I'm graduating with First-Class Honours and working towards representing SIM at the 2026 ASEAN University Games," she says.

Her efforts have been recognised through the Sports and Artistic Talent Award, a programme under the SIM Impact Fund. This is also an acknowledgement of Wei Min's achievements across both academics and athletics.

"I have always sought to excel in both sports and academics while contributing positively back to the community," she says. "Through mentoring, leadership, and active involvement in campus life, I hope to inspire others to pursue their goals, overcome challenges, and realise their potential. More importantly, I hope to foster a strong sense of pride and belonging within the SIM community."

Wei Min is also passionate about sports development in Singapore.

She continues, "Sports have the power to bring people together, build school spirit, and develop life skills that extend far beyond the playing field. I believe this award will not only support my immediate goals but also empower me to give back meaningfully to the sports community in the future."

Wei Min's journey reflects the calibre of students at SIM: individuals who combine academic strength with real-world experience, and who approach their development with intention. Through a holistic education that extends beyond the classroom, they are equipped not only to succeed in the working world, but to shape the spaces they step into with purpose and impact.
