Janelle Low Stepping Into the Unknown and Returning with Confidence
For Janelle Low, a semester at the University of Stirling was an opportunity to step beyond the familiar and step into the unknown. Supported by the SIM Study Abroad Award, a programme under the SIM Impact Fund, she gained more than an overseas learning experience. From adapting to a new culture and academic environment to building independence and confidence, the journey broadened her perspective and strengthened her readiness for the future.

When Janelle Low enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Digital Media at SIM-University of Stirling, she knew what she wanted to pursue. Having studied a related discipline in polytechnic, she was drawn to a field that combined creativity, storytelling, and digital communication.
Yet one of the most defining decisions of her university journey happened outside the classroom. When the opportunity to study abroad arose, Janelle chose a path few of her peers were taking. While many students opted for the more established autumn exchange, she applied for the inaugural Spring Semester Exchange Programme at the University of Stirling in Scotland.
"As it was the first time the Spring exchange was being organised, there was naturally some uncertainty about what to expect. However, I saw that as part of the adventure."
It was a decision that reflected her willingness to make most of the unfamiliar. The timing felt right, and the programme offered an opportunity to build new connections beyond her existing social circle. "The spring semester felt like the right timing, and it also allowed me to meet a completely new group of people and to build friendships outside of my existing circle."
What followed was a four-month experience that would challenge her perspectives, strengthen her confidence, and leave a lasting impact on how she approaches both life and learning.
The Support Behind a Transformative Opportunity
Studying abroad had always been something Janelle wanted to experience, and the SIM Study Abroad Award gave her the confidence and support to make the most of the opportunity.

"While I was determined to make the exchange happen, the award provided valuable support for both my family and me. It helped offset key expenses, enabling me to focus on making the most of the experience and embracing every opportunity it offered."
The support provided more than practical assistance. It gave her reassurance and confidence. "I remember feeling excited, relieved, and thankful all at the same time. Receiving the award gave me confidence that pursuing the exchange was the right decision, and it reassured me that I could fully seize the opportunity while giving my family greater peace of mind."
With the support of the award, Janelle could focus her energy on what mattered most: immersing herself in a new environment and making the most of every opportunity the experience offered.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
Living and studying in Scotland exposed Janelle to a different way of life. While adapting to a new country can often feel daunting, she found the transition smoother than expected. "I was in Scotland for about four months. Adapting to the culture was easier than I expected because everyone was very welcoming and friendly, and the pace of life there was much slower."
Academically, however, there were adjustments to make. Different teaching styles, classroom dynamics, and approaches to collaboration challenged her to adapt quickly. "Working with groupmates from diverse backgrounds also presented an initial challenge, especially in terms of communication styles and differing ideas and perspectives."

But the experience pushed her to become more open-minded and flexible when working with others. "Over time, I gradually adjusted by staying organised, actively asking questions, and learning to be more open-minded and collaborative."
These experiences helped her develop skills that extend far beyond academic performance. They strengthened her ability to navigate ambiguity, collaborate across cultures, and adapt to unfamiliar situations - qualities that are increasingly valuable in today's global environment.
Building Independence Through Challenges
Like any overseas experience, the exchange was not without its difficulties. One of the biggest challenges Janelle encountered was falling ill while away from home. Without the familiar comforts and support systems she was accustomed to in Singapore, she had to learn how to care for herself independently.
"One of the biggest challenges I faced while abroad was falling sick during my exchange. Recovering was particularly difficult as it was not easy to access familiar, comforting foods or meals that I usually rely on when I'm unwell."
Although it was a difficult experience, it became an important lesson in resilience and independence. "However, I learned to adapt by being more intentional with my choices, seeking out suitable food options, and giving myself enough time to rest and recover properly."
The experience reinforced a valuable lesson: growth often happens when we are required to navigate unfamiliar situations on our own. Living abroad challenged her to become more independent and confident in handling unforeseen circumstances.

Growth was not limited to lectures and group projects. Outside the classroom, Janelle found opportunities to challenge herself in different ways. A passionate runner, she seized the opportunity to participate in a half-marathon in Glasgow during her exchange.
"Running has always been a big part of my life, so being able to participate in a race overseas in Glasgow was incredibly special. From the cooling weather, scenic route and the atmosphere on race day, it was a completely different experience from races back in Singapore. This race would always be one that I will never forget."
The race became more than just a personal milestone. In many ways, it reflected the spirit of her exchange experience itself - embracing the unfamiliar, pushing beyond her comfort zone, and discovering new possibilities through the journey.
A Broader Perspective for the Future
If she had to describe her study abroad journey in a single word, the answer comes easily. "Unforgettable."

"My study abroad experience pushed me beyond my comfort zone in ways I never expected. Living in a new country taught me how to be more independent, adaptable, and confident in navigating unfamiliar situations. It also allowed me to meet people from different places, build meaningful friendships, and gain new perspectives on both academics and life. The memories, lessons, and connections I made during those four months are something I will carry with me long after the exchange has ended."
By choosing an unfamiliar path and embracing the uncertainty that came with it, Janelle discovered that some of life's most valuable lessons happen beyond the boundaries of what is comfortable. Supported by the SIM Study Abroad Award, she returned with far more than memories of an overseas exchange. She came home with greater confidence, stronger independence, and the conviction to keep stepping into new opportunities wherever they may lead.
