The Monash University Foundation Year (MUFY) is designed to prepare students for undergraduate study at Monash University. Students who pass the programme will be guaranteed entry into the first year of an undergraduate degree at Monash University, subject to meeting entry requirements and pre-requisites.

The MUFY qualification is also recognised by other Australian universities and universities in New Zealand and the United Kingdom.

Age requirement: Applicants need to be 16 years old by the MUFY semester commencement date.  

Note:  Applicants who hold Australian or New Zealand Citizenship or Australian Permanent Residency are not eligible to apply. Applicants who are granted Australian Permanent Residency after enrolment in the Foundation Year program will not be guaranteed entry into Monash University.

The maximum candidature period is 1.5 years, subject to approval by Monash College. There will not be any refund should the student fail to complete within the maximum allowed period.

Curriculum

Structure

  • Delivery is in blended mode with a mix of on-campus classes and online learning activities.
  • This programme is taught by local academics and practitioners in the industry. All classes are delivered by local lecturers, based on the unit materials and online learning resources via the Monash Learning Management System.

  • Average teacher-student ratio is 1:11.
  • The on-campus classes are scheduled on weekday mornings or afternoons at SIM HQ, over 14 weeks each semester. Each class is a 5-hour session including break time.
  • Minimum class size to commence: 50 students.
  • In the event that the minimum number is not met, the intake may not commence. The student shall be informed within one month before programme commencement.

Assessment & Attendance

  • Assessment comprises a mix of coursework (such as research projects, assignments, presentations, reports and class tests) and final examinations. 
  • Final examinations are conducted at the end of each semester. 
  • All assessment is set by Monash College. 
  • Attendance requirement: 
    • Full-time local students: 75% 
    • International students: 90% 

Requirements to Graduate

  • Students who successfully complete all academic requirements of the programme will be awarded the Monash University Foundation Year Certificate by Monash College, Australia.

Modules

The programme can be completed over two 6-month semesters full-time.  

Students are required to complete 8 Units to be awarded the qualification. They can choose to complete an additional Unit if they want to.

The unit combination for completion of the programme is: 

  • English Unit 1 and Unit 2 (compulsory) 
  • Unit 1 and Unit 2 of two other subjects 
  • Two additional units (standalone units or paired units)

The units were chosen to be offered at SIM as they would satisfy pre-requisite requirements for most undergraduate degrees in Art, Design and Architecture, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business and Information Technology at Monash University.

Applicants need to satisfy academic entry requirements, English language requirement and age requirement.

Accepted Entry Qualifications

The following qualifications are accepted: 

  • A minimum of 15 points in 5 GCE ‘O’ academic subjects  
    • Grading Scale: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1, F=0 
  • A minimum of 3 points for 3 H2 subject in GCE ‘A’ level  
    • Two H1 level subjects can be counted in place of one H2 level subject, provided that the subject has not been taken at H2 level, and there is at least one H2 level subject included in the calculation 
    • Grade Scale for H2 Level: A=5, B=4, C=3, D=2, E=1 and H1 Level A=2.5, B=2, C=1.5, D=1, E=0.5 
  • Other equivalent qualification approved by Monash University

Mandatory One-time Fees

All fees inclusive of prevailing GST. 

International Student Induction Fee 

A one-time fee payable by new full-time international students. This fee covers pre-arrival and arrival support, including activities to enhance the international student learning experience.

Payable for each application form that is submitted. Fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. The fee will be refunded fully only if the intake does not commence. Unpaid applications will not be processed.
