Executive MBA
An Executive MBA programme is Master’s degree in Business Administration designed to allow experienced professionals to obtain an advanced business degree on a schedule that minimises disruption to work and personal life. The UB EMBA programme is delivered in a cohort structure that offers a lockstep, planned curriculum in an executive setting. Members of each class begin the programme in March, move through the curriculum together, and typically complete the degree requirements for graduation as a group.
In addition to the delivery format, what differentiates an EMBA from an MBA programme is the collective professional experience of its participants, which greatly enriches the educational environment. In contrast to a non-executive MBA, the EMBA programme requires at least 5 years professional work experience. This requirement facilitates an academic environment that is rich with the real world experience and examples from other students in the class. The emphasis on group projects and class interaction combined with the high level of professional experience in the cohort provides for maximum return on time and resources invested by the students.
The EMBA degree targets a different segment of the population. EMBA students are seasoned professionals with substantial career experience while MBA students are typically young professionals, often right out of their undergraduate degree. Other than delivery format and required work experience an EMBA and an MBA are the same degree with the same curriculum, both provide graduates with a comprehensive set of business skills and qualifications. Graduates of the UB EMBA programme in Singapore will receive a Master’s of Business Administration degree from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York.
Objectives
The EMBA is designed to propel mid-career managers ahead by providing:
- Practical knowledge of the latest management decision-making techniques;
- A thorough understanding of the key functional areas of business;
- Opportunities to acquire and refine leadership and executive problem-solving skills; and
- Superior instruction by a highly qualified, experienced faculty.
The EMBA curriculum covers the same material as UB’s regular MBA programme, but with added focus on:
- The cross-disciplinary integration of subjects, such as the key linkages between accounting, finance, decision methods, marketing, information systems and human resources
- The development of essential leadership and team-building skills
- An understanding of international business and the implications of a rapidly evolving global economy

Mode of Delivery
All Executive MBA modules, with the exception of the project module, are delivered in lecture style format. The faculty members from the UB School of Management come to Singapore to deliver 2 weeks worth of lectures for each subject. The EMBA project module is a self-paced class in which each student must complete a comprehensive strategy analysis and implementation plan based on what they have learned throughout the programme. While working on their individual projects, the students will have a scheduled time line of tasks and meetings with the professor to ensure completion of the project by the due date.
Attendance at Classes
Class attendance is compulsory for this programme. Students’ participation is considered part of the performance assessment for each module. Without advance notice, students can miss a half-day session because of work-related contingencies. (The faculty member should be notified as far in advance as possible.) Under no circumstances can students miss more than two half-day sessions. Students who miss more than two half-day sessions will be asked to defer and make up the module when it is next offered (typically the following year).
Absence from class with no advance notice
Grounds for this type of absence will usually relate to personal health and emergency matters. You are responsible for providing the reasons in writing along with supporting documentation.
A unique feature of the EMBA is its programmatic focus on the essential skills required for senior level success in management. These skills are given special emphasis in the Strategic Leadership Development (SLD) sequence:
