SIM Campus Development

SIM announced a Campus Development Master Plan to expand its Clementi campus at a platform topping up ceremony on 9 October 2009. The ceremony was officiated by President S R Nathan and Mrs Nathan.

The Master Plan, which cost $300 million and is expected to be completed by 2014, comprises two phases. Upon full completion, it will render an additional 63,000 square metres of space, more than double its current campus, thus consolidating its position as the largest private tertiary institution in Singapore, both in terms of total campus size and student enrolment.

Phase 1, a 30,000 sqm Annex Building adjacent to the existing HQ Building, was completed in December 2010. It was officially launched by President Tony Tan Keng Yam on 16 March 2012.

Phase 2 construction commenced in February 2012 and is expected to be completed by 2014.

Strong Growth in Student Population

SIM moved into its current HQ building in 2001 with a student enrolment of over 14,000. Since then, SIM’s student population has ballooned to more than 36,000.

The expanded campus will cater primarily to the growing needs of SIM University – an entity under the SIM Group. Established in 2005 as Singapore’s first and only private university dedicated to adult learning, SIM University plays a unique role in catering to the tertiary education and lifelong learning needs of working adults. In August 2012 , it has also been mandated by the Government to provide full-time publicly-funded undergraduate studies.

Its range of relevant and recognised degree programmes offered through a flexible mode of study is fast gaining popularity with many who are looking for higher qualifications, career advancement or self-fulfillment.

With the added incentive of an MOE subsidy of up to 55% for its students, SIM University has seen a substantial jump in its enrolment. It now has over 13,000 students, compared to 8,000 in 2007. This number is expected to grow to 14,000 by 2015 as continuing education and training continues to play a pivotal role in Singapore’s economic growth.

The expanded campus will also cater to the growing student population of SIM Global Education (SIM GE), another entity under the SIM Group. SIM GE offers degree programmes through its 11 international partner universities such as University of London (UOL) and Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). SIM GE’s enrolment is expected to grow steadily as more fresh school leavers aspire to obtain a degree.

SIM’s plan to increase its campus size is thus made to cater to existing needs as well as in anticipation of the steady growth in its student population as it looks forward to playing a greater role as a leading higher education and lifelong learning institute.

March 2012

SIM officially opened its HQ Annex Building in a ceremony on 16 March 2012, officiated by President Tony Tan Keng Yam.

Groundbreaking for Phase 2

February 2012

On 7 February 2012, a small crowd gathered at the empty space outside the Annex Building to witness a new milestone in SIM’s history. By pressing a button, the respective chairpersons of the SIM Governing Council, Singapore Institute of Management Pte Ltd Board of Directors and SIM University Board of Trustees began the drilling process at the construction site. This groundbreaking ceremony celebrated the symbolic beginning of the construction of Phase 2.

Completion of Phase 1

December 2010

The completion of Phase 1 added 30,000 sq m of space comprising more than 60 lecture theatres, seminar rooms and computer laboratories, as well as a library extension, a student hub, an open courtyard and eating outlets.

Phase 1 Topping Out Ceremony

October 2010

A year after construction started, a topping out ceremony was held on 1 October 2010 to mark the completion of the superstructure for the Phase 1 building. Professor Cham Tao Soon (Chairman of SIM University Board of Trustees and Special Advisor to SIM Group), along with senior management from the SIM Group led a small group of SIM staff to attend the symbolic event where they shovelled cement to 'top out' the roof of the building.

Phase 1 Topping Up Ceremony

October 2009

On 9 October 2009, President S R Nathan and Mrs Nathan officiated the SIM Campus Development Topping Up Ceremony at SIM HQ Clementi campus. At the event attended by more than 200 guests, President S R Nathan was asked to hit the 'gong' to activate the lowering of the concrete slab.
