SIM University (UniSIM) will be renamed the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS) as from today, according to a joint announcement made by the Ministry of Education and the newly named university. This renaming is part of the restructuring to turn UniSIM into Singapore’s sixth Autonomous University (AU).
Commenting on the renaming, Minister for Higher Education and Skills, Ong Ye Kung, said, “The name was chosen to reflect the AU’s mission of driving lifelong learning anchored in disciplines with a strong social focus. SUSS will add diversity to Singapore’s higher education landscape and complement the existing five AUs. What will be most unique about the University is its tradition of applied education, and outreach to adult learners, all of which will be kept and strengthened.”
The University will have two distinctive features in its provision of higher education: the social sciences and continuing and lifelong education. The former will cover disciplines that have a strong impact on human and community development. This will include programmes such as social work and early childhood education, careers with a strong social orientation, such as human resource management, as well as law (focusing on family and criminal law). At the same time, the University will continue to retain a limited offering in other areas such as business and engineering, especially for adult learners. The range of programmes for fresh school leavers and adult learners previously offered will also be continued.
SUSS will also focus on lifelong and continuing learning and participate strongly in SkillsFuture – Singapore’s national movement for fostering continuing education and skills development.
SIM is proud of this development and sees it as a positive move for UniSIM to fulfil its role in the evolving tertiary and manpower training landscape. With this restructuring, SUSS will come under the ambit of MOE and will no longer be a part of the SIM Group.
The SIM Group now comprises the SIM Global Education, SIM Professional Development as well as two new business entities, the SIM International Academy (SIM IA) and Platform E.
The SIM IA offers an IGCSE high school education locally, leveraging Singapore’s and SIM’s strong education brands, and aims to provide a seamless pathway for students to articulate to tertiary level at SIM.
Platform E is a comprehensive entrepreneurship ecosystem which integrates training, incubation and acceleration of start-ups to nurture the next generation of entrepreneurs.
