More than 3,000 graduates will be receiving their hard-earned degrees at this year’s SIM-RMIT graduation ceremony held from August 22 to 25.
This year’s ceremony also marks 30 years of partnership between SIM Global Education and RMIT University, the oldest and largest education partnership between a Singapore and an Australian institution. To date, more than 33,000 alumni have walked through the door of this partnership which started in the 1980s. This partnership, together with SIM’s first with the University of London, helped transform the Singapore education landscape by offering overseas degrees locally.
His Excellency Mr Bruce Gosper, the Australian High Commissioner to Singapore, was the Guest of Honour at this year’s ceremony. In light of challenges posed by rapid changes in globalisation, technology, geopolitics and climate, he advised the new graduates to invest in three areas:
- Support and engage with institutions that are based on rules, openness and equality as such institutions are important in protecting the weak and providing security.
- Invest in relationships. Build mutual trust and respect with your counterparts by understanding their interests and values. Have the generosity to engage with people including those who are different from you, while having the confidence to reach your own views.
- Do not stop learning. Be original and not rely on others’ opinions. Develop a sense of curiosity, use the information to your advantage, apply and adapt what you’ve learnt.

Mr Tan Soo Jin, Chairman of the SIM Governing Council, also exhorted the new graduates to go forth and do every small thing as if it were a great thing. His parting words - to be accountable for one’s actions and respect people regardless of roles and ranks.
This year’s ceremony is being held over seven sessions at SIM Grand Hall. As part of the SIM-RMIT 30th Anniversary celebrations, the two institutions will also be hosting a dinner for stakeholders at the official residence of HE Mr Bruce Gosper.
