Ekata, A Hope for a New Beginning, a musical extravaganza by the SIM Indonesia Community (InSIM), took to the stage of the SIM Performing Arts Theatre on 19 and 20 January, charming the 700-strong audience, including guests from the Indonesian Embassy in Singapore and key event sponsors.
Ekata tells of three tribes’ journey of love, trust, and unity after a turn of events disrupted their otherwise peaceful relationship.
A tense face-off among members of the different tribes.
A heart-wrenching scene from the production that took four months to bring to fruition.
The musical was InSIM’s flagship theatrical event of the year. Known as InSIGHT, the annual performance is in its eighth year. InSIGHT productions are entirety student-led from inception to end.
Producing the musical exposed students to an environment that called for multi-faceted skills – budgeting, sponsorship management, as well as marketing and public relations. It also gave them a glimpse into the technical aspects of prop design, theatrical make-up, and even vocal and speech techniques.
Many of the performers only learnt to sing and dance after being cast.
Dancers trained at least thrice weekly in preparation for their roles.
Olivia Angelina Hu, one of the cast members, said, “Being cast in Ekata set me on a journey towards my dream of being in a theatre production. The months of juggling acting, dancing, and singing practices, along with classes, were indeed very hectic, but the experience was fulfilling. Working with other passionate and talented individuals on such a big project has built a camaraderie amongst the team that no word can describe. Ekata was definitely an amazing experience and an eye-opener for me!”
