Inaugural SIM Regional Educators Conference a rich learning ground for educators

12 Jan 2018

Sixty educators from some ten countries came together for the SIM Regional Educators Conference held from 7-8 December 2017. Participants learnt about the latest in teaching pedagogies, discussed critical issues in education and exchanged knowledge and best practices.

Organised by SIM’s Regional Marketing and Recruitment Department, the event brought together like-minded educators - Principals, Vice-Principals, Heads of Schools as well as teachers – who attended various workshops that holistically addressed the teaching eco-system from the broad to the narrow.

Topics included looking at how schools can ‘harness (student) understanding’, the use of specific educational strategies like design-thinking, as well as a teacher-centered look at research-based methods to prepare educators for teaching.

Dr Aaron Tan, Director, Teaching and Learning Division, SIM Global Education, conducting a workshop on Learning Oriented Teaching.

In attendance were educators from neighbouring Southeast Asian countries as well as those further afield such as China, India and Taiwan.

Here’s what participants had to say about the event:

“Singapore has one of the (world’s) leading education systems so coming here was something I was looking forward to. And indeed I learnt a lot. At the workshop by University at Buffalo Associate Dean, Dr Randy, he pointed out that teachers often focus on the ‘do’ while neglecting to ‘think’ about the progress of the education system or how we can further improve our teaching. It wasa good reminder.”

Yong Jen Na, Teacher at the Lodge International School (Malaysia)

“As Head of School, I need to guide the students using new educational methodologies and approaches. I think my learning from this conference will benefit my students as well as my teachers. Incidentally, half of the students from my school go abroad eventually. Right now we have about ten students studying in SIM, so I wanted to come and ‘experience’ it first-hand for myself. From what I see the programmes are very innovative and complete.”

Chen Wei-hung Lawrence, Head of Dinh Thien Ly Sec - High School (Lawrence S. Ting School, Vietnam)
