Building Singapore's human capital for the future

28 Aug 2018

SIM Global Education welcomed Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, Speaker of Parliament for a dialogue session with its students in July.

Themed ‘HEARTWARE & HARDWARE – the new human capital’, the dialogue focused on how employers are now looking beyond degree qualifications as they go in search of talent for their organisations.

Community service and volunteerism (the ‘HEARTWARE’) were discussed as some of the activities that help build character and nurture the next generation to have empathy and resilience.

During the dialogue, Mr Tan was candid as he shared about his passions and experiences. Particularly close to his heart is the social services sector dating back to when he was the Minister for Social and Family development. Mr Tan also continues to drive SG Cares, a movement that encourages volunteerism.

The dialogue session proved to be a fruitful and inspiring one for the students.

“The dialogue with Mr Tan was refreshing and eye-opening as it gave us a glimpse of the thought process behind every policy decision," said Gerald Lim, a third-year SIM-University of London student. "We learnt much from Mr Tan and were inspired in various ways to contribute to the nation."

Mr Tan encouraged students to step forward and play their part in fostering a more caring society,
and also shared real-life examples of some of the challenges the underprivileged in society face.
