SIM and Singularity University hold conference to help companies explore exponential technologies for business transformation

22 Mar 2019

The Singapore Institute of Management (SIM) is collaborating with Singularity University (SU) to help local SMEs and MNCs explore exponential technologies and how these will impact and drive their organisations in the future. The first initiative in this collaboration is the inaugural roundtable conference to be held in Singapore from 25-26 March 2019 at The Ritz Carlton, Millenia Singapore.

SU is a well-known Silicon Valley think-tank which facilitates and empowers individuals and organisations across the globe in using fast accelerating and disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and digital biology, to tackle the world’s biggest challenges and build a better future for all.  Working with SU is the SIM Professional Development (SIM PD) unit which partners individuals and organisations strategically to develop their potential through skills training and advisory services.

Co-curated and supported by SkillsFuture Singapore, the pilot conference is fully subscribed with more than 380 participants from multinational companies (MNCs), Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), start-ups and the public service. 85 per cent of these participants are C-suite decision makers from sectors such as financial & insurance, scientific & technical, manufacturing, and wholesale & retail trade. About 60 per cent of these organisations are SMEs.

The two-day ‘Singularity University Exponential: Strategy Development’ conference will tap on SU’s expertise and unique pedagogies to help SMEs and MNCs develop a good understanding of exponential technologies, predict their impact on businesses and kick-start their capability development towards business transformation and growth.  Participants will be guided to identify new business opportunities arising from exponential technologies as well as build leadership and management skills that will help create and sustain a collaborative culture that fosters innovation.

Another important take-away of the conference is that participants will be able to map their understanding of disruptive factors especially in technology, the state of their businesses and obstacles such as capability gaps through a pre-and post-conference survey. This mapping of understanding and needs will help companies identify gaps in business and human talent that need to be plugged to achieve exponential growth. With this initial capability mapping, SIM PD will follow up and work with companies to delve deeper into developing strategic roadmaps and provide support in training and competencies to bring businesses to the next level of growth.

The conference signifies a broader partnership between SIM and SU to help local businesses, especially SMEs, gain knowledge and confidence to envision new business models for scaling up and taking the next leap by leveraging on emerging technologies. This is in line with the Singapore Government’s Industry 4.0 technological push to be a Smart Nation and grow SMEs to be the future drivers of the economy.

Commenting on the partnership and conference, Ms Euleen Goh, Chairman of the SIM Governing Council said, “We are excited to partner SU in bringing this forum to help local businesses gain deep insights into the future of the economy driven by technological and digital changes. With this conference, companies can sharpen their foresight and better drive the development of strategic directions and business plans.”

SIM and SU share the belief that understanding exponential technologies and deep skills training to develop human talent must work hand in hand to address global challenges and societal needs, and drive positive change to impact lives.

The conference will be the start of an ongoing engagement with individuals and businesses to help them act on their business transformation plans.  As part of the conference alumni network, participants will be inducted into the SIM PD-SU global learning community where members can network, collaborate and learn from one another to create an innovative ecosystem to drive impactful changes through cutting-edge technology. They will also be able to benefit from SU’s unique expertise, methodologies and programmes, SIM PD’s executive programmes, as well as from international industry visits and masterclasses to learn from global industries’ best-in-class practices.
